Ficus Lyrata is a member of the genus Ficus, the same genus which the common fig tree, ‘Ficus carica’, belongs to. The most commonly grown cultivar of the Ficus Lyrata species is the beloved Fiddle Leaf Fig, often referred to in the plant community simply as “FLF”. The Bambino, Little Sunshine, and Little Fiddle varieties are essentially smaller leaved or dwarf versions of the standard FLF. Native to tropical western and central Africa, this tree can reach a height of up to 100 feet in the wild. As a houseplant, FLF’s generally do not exceed heights of 10 feet.

Care Guide
Light
Ficus Lyrata or Fiddle Leaf Fig thrives in bright, indirect light. Fiddle Leaf Figs have higher light requirements than many houseplants, and should generally be placed no more than 2’ from a window or light exposure. Be careful with direct light, which can burn the leaves of this plant.
Water and Soil
Fiddle Leaf Figs like to be watered when the top few inches of soil in the pot have dried out. As with most indoor plants, it is best to err on the side of underwatering, since overwatering can have immediate and everlasting consequences. If you notice the leaves of your plant looking floppy or droopy, this is normally a sign of lack of water.
Fiddle Leaf Figs require a well draining soil. This can be accomplished by amending a standard potting mix with perlite, bark and/or lava rock. The Lyrata will appreciate a pot that provides ample room for its roots. Because they are vigorous growers and commonly reach 8 to 10 feet in height, they benefit greatly from re-potting every few years, or until they have reached the desired size for your space. Once they are in their forever-pot, simply top-dress these plants annually with fresh soil.
Temperature and Humidity
Ficus Lyrata prefers a warm, room-temperature setting between 60 and 80 degrees F. Temperatures below 55 can cause damage to your FLF, and drops to temperatures below 50 can be fatal. Ficus Lyrata would love higher humidity, but the humidity found in an average home will generally be sufficient for these plants.
