The Kangaroo Paw Fern is an interesting and unusual plant, and would make an excellent choice for someone new to caring for ferns. Native to Australia, this plant features elongated leaves that sit atop wiry stems. Its name actually refers to the size of the plants leaves – their long length is compared to the size of a Kangaroo’s foot, which are apparently quite huge. The Kangaroo Fern is a type of “footed fern” meaning that its leaf stems actually grow out of rhizomes or “feet” which sit atop the soil. These “feet”, or rhizomes are hairy in texture and can be split to allow for division or reproduction.

Care Guide

Light

As far as Ferns go, the Kangaroo Fern is not demanding to care for, and these plants will accept a range of lighting exposures. Medium to bright indirect light is preferable, although this plant can also tolerate lower exposures. Direct, harsh sun should be avoided as it can harm this plants foliage.

Water and Soil

Kangaroo Paw Ferns prefer evenly moist soil, but are forgiving if you allow them to dry out once in a while. As a rule of thumb, these plants should be watered again once the top 1-2" of soil has dried. A droopy, wilted appearance normally points to a lack of water, and your plant should perk back up again once its soil is re-saturated. Like most all houseplants, Kangaroo Paw Ferns are susceptible to overwatering, so care should be taken to ensure this plants soil does not become soggy or waterlogged.

Temperature and Humidity

Kangaroo Ferns typically prefer temperatures ranging from 70 to 80 degrees F. Moderate to high humidity is ideal.
