Peperomia is a genus of plants within the pepper family (Piperaceae). The genus Peperomia is large, and there are currently over 1500 known species. These plants are found growing in the tropical regions of Central and South America. Most Peperomia are fairly compact plants which do not exceed 12” in height. Peperomia are considered “semi-succulent” plants, meaning that they store moisture in their fleshy leaves or stems. Peperomia are grown for their foliage, but they also produce a flower which some refer to as a “rat tail” bloom.

Care Guide

Light

This plant thrives in bright indirect light. South or west facing exposures would be ideal. Low lighting should be avoided.

Water and Soil

These varieties of Peperomia are semi-succulent in nature, meaning that they reserve extra water in their stems and leaves. This makes these Peperomia very susceptible to overwatering, and care should be taken to ensure they are not watered too often. Water only when around 70% or more of the soil is dry. This plant likes well-draining, porous soil that is airy and not compact. This can be achieved by amending a standard, well draining potting mix with perlite and peat.

Temperature and Humidity

Peperomia prefer temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees F. Cold drafts and temperatures below 60 degrees F may damage this plants foliage and should be avoided. While this plant does fine in the humidity found in the average home, it would certainly benefit from added humidity.
