Rhoeo Spathacea 'Dwarf Purple Oyster Plant'

Also known as Moses-in-the-cradle, purple leaved spider wort, or boat lily, Tradescantia spathacea is native to Central America. In its natural environment, the Oyster plant can be quite invasive, growing under the shade canopy of trees. The Oyster plant is one of the only tradescantia varieties which is upright growing, rather than trailing. Considered a medicinal herb in some cultures, the Oyster plant is said to reduce inflammation and heal other ailments.

Care Guide

Light

This plant thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sun, as it may burn the leaves of the Oyster plant. Dark corners should also be avoided, as this plant does not do well in low light. If the color of this plant starts to fade or new leaves are fully green, it is likely lacking sufficient sunlight. 

Water

Oyster plants have thickened leaves, and are considered semi-succulent in nature. For this reason it is important that they are allowed to dry out a bit between waterings. Oyster plants like well-draining, porous soil. A well-draining potting soil that is amended with peat moss for absorption and perlite or bark for drainage will work well.

Temperature and Humidity

Oyster plants prefer typical room temperatures ranging from 65 to 80 degrees F. Cold drafts and temperatures below 55 degrees F may damage this plants foliage and should be avoided. Oyster plants do not require high humidity, and normally do well at standard household humidity levels.
