Rhipsalis is a genus of cacti, from the family Cactaceae, and it is comprised of about 40 species. A delicate looking plant with long, trailing stems, Rhipalis has care needs which are different than most other cacti and succulent plants. Native to South America, Central America, and the Carribbean, Rhipsalis are used to high humidity and frequent rainfall. In nature these plants are found growing ephiphytically, off of trees and other surfaces rather than in the soil.

Care Guide

Light

Rhipsalis grows well in moderate indirect light. Unlike most cacti, Rhipsalis is not equipped to be grown in high sunlight, and actually prefers a bit of shade. Keep in mind that this plant is used to growing in the understory of a tropical rainforest, rather than in a sunny dry desert. Direct, harsh sunlight should be avoided.

Water and Soil

Rhipsalis will prefer to dry out a bit between waterings, but is not nearly as drought hardy as your typical cactus. This makes sense when you take into account the thinness of this plants stems, as compared to most other cactus species. Rhipsalis will prefer its soil to be kept very lightly moist. This can be achieved by watering often, in small amounts. Well-draining potting soil that is amended with a bit of peat, perlite and/or bark is perfect for this plant.

Temperature and Humidity

Rhipsalis is a tropical plant which prefers temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees F when kept indoors. Temperatures below 55 degrees should be avoided, as they may be harmful to this plants foliage. Unlike most cacti, Rhipsalis do appreciate added humidity. Moderate to high humidity is ideal for these cacti.
